Mike Greenspan - I just thought I would also mention that two years before going to work in Rhodesia, I went with my parents (I was 21) to Sydney. My father was seconded to Sydney by the major film company that he was working for in London, to mind the fort for a few months, whilst the MD of the company there recovered from a heart attack. In actual fact we were in Australia for 6 months. We sailed out on the Canberra, a pleasant enough trip through the Suez Canal, but it was the trip back on the (old) Oriana that was truly the trip of a lifetime. The ship sailed back via the Panama Canal and stops like Auckland, Suva, Honolulu, Vancouver San Francisco etc were absolutely fabulous ports of call.

That trip on the Oriana was the last I made by sea. Since 1967 I spent some years working in Singapore and Hong Kong and then back in UK I spent on average 4-6 months (not all at once) travelling on business to the USA, Middle East and Tokyo and Seoul, but all by air until I retired in 1998. Below photo is one I took as we passed through the Panama Canal.
